CASA VALENTINA- MAY 2015
Communities in Bloom's first project was on May 9th and May 16th, at Casa Valentina in Coconut Grove, Miami. Casa Valentina is "an affordable housing and life skills program for at risk youth transitioning from foster care to independent living in Miami-Dade County." Casa Valentina asked Communities in Bloom to transform an empty lot next to the housing for young women and children into beautiful, serene, urban garden. The task at first seemed impossible! The lot had tons of garbage, random pieces of concrete, broken trees, and lots of weeds. Thanks to the help of our wonderful volunteers we were able to clear the brush on our first day of work, May 9th. On the second day, May 16th, after clearing the lot, we layed mulch over the whole lot, planted 356 plants all donated by Costa Farms, and painted an 80 foot mural. The designs for the mural were contest entries submitted to us prior to the painting day. The outcome for this project and the response we received from the community was more than we could have ever hoped for. We had 40+ teen volunteers and volunteers from Costa Farms and Forte Farms.
